Monumental vase, design by Hubert Gessner for E. Balakowits Sohne, Johann Loetz-Witwe, decor Luna, ca. 1902
After his studies and work with Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts, Hubert Gessner became an influential Viennese architect. In 1902, the glass distributor E. Bakalowits Söhne commissioned him with a verifiable total of seven designs, all of which embodied the typical form language of the strict Viennese Jugendstil: clear austere lines, a strong reduction and a focus on the essentials.
The surprisingly tall vase by Gessner bears a beautiful blue-green, ribbed “Luna” decoration. The latter was often used by the designers working for E. Bakalowits Söhne and gives the object a wonderful lightness, despite the enormous proportions. This vase is a textbook example of Viennese Jugendstil from around 1900.
