Large vase with etched decor, Hans Bolek, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Opal with black, ca. 1915
The bowl by Hans Bolek with the striking decor “Opal with Black” belongs to the group of glasses which Loetz had designed after the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914.
Optically charming with its heart leaf vines, this series testifies to the high craftsmanship of the glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe. The bowl is underlaid with opal white glass and overlaid with black glass. The decor was then etched out with hydrofluoric acid from this overlay which revealed the ice-like opal surface.
We are in the fortunate position of being able to offer three different glass vessels from this series designed by Hans Bolek. This makes it possible to compare the effect of the same decoration on different vase shapes.
Bolek divides the wall of the bowl into a vegetable-decorative and a geometric-strict part. On the upper part, the heart-leaf pattern runs around the bowl like a frieze. In contrast to this, vertical stripes structure the wall in the lower area and lend the vessel a certain formal strictness along with the flush ground edge. The ground down upper edge and on the bottom of the bowl clearly show the layered structure with underlay and overlay.
