Table lamp, Emanuel Josef Margold attr., school of Josef Hoffmann, Loetz Glass discs, Cobalt Papillon decoration, ca. 1907
As a teacher at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, Josef Hoffmann taught some very talented architects and designers. His distinctive style influenced several generations of artists and continued to have an impact in the world of design for a long time. This table lamp was probably designed by one of Josef Hoffmann’s students. Emanuel Josef Margold in particular was known to use wavy ornaments like those running around the lamp shade edge. The material used and the “hammer stroke decoration” on the brass are also typical stylistic features of Josef Hoffmann.
Finally, the combination of this design with glass from the Loetz manufacture is a clear indication of its origin in the school of Josef Hoffmann. Similar designs can also be found in the production of the Wiener Werkstätte from around 1907. This object is a fantastic object from the peak of Viennese Jugendstil.
Josef Hoffmann (Brtnice 1870 – 1956 Vienna), co-founder of the Viennese Secession and of the Wiener Werkstätte, was an extremely productive and versatile architect and designer. Throughout his career he experimented with various forms, techniques and materials. In his designs, he was striving for a strong reduction of the form to the essential and was a pioneer of geometric Jugendstil. This is how his characteristic geometric style was established. The scope of his designs ranges from buildings and entire interiors, following the concept of the “Gesamtkunstwerk” (total work of art), all the way to small details of everyday life. One of his most significant works is the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, a Gesamtkunstwerk which he executed for a wealthy entrepreneur between 1905 and 1911 in collaboration with, among others, Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser.
