Vase with saurian, designed by Eduard Stellmacher, Amphora-Werke, Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel, ca. 1902, ceramics, marked
Vases with saurians, sea monsters as well as other animal creatures are among the most popular and exquisite objects of the house of Amphora. This excellent example from the sought-after series of grotesque ceramics features a mounted saurian on gray-green marbling, which appears to wrap around the vase itself. The glaze shines in calm ochre and brown tones with purple and green color for shades. Most exciting upon closer inspection is the use of a fine gilding, which in turn leads to shimmering interplays in daylight and ambient light. This art and collectible represents both its aesthetic and craftsmanship quality.
