The two figures were created as models for bronze door decorations in the dining room of Palais Dumba in Vienna. The important patron Nikolaus Dumba had commissioned Franz Matsch to design the dining room in 1893, and Stefan Schwartz created the figural sculptural elements for this interior.
In a historic photograph of the dining room, the pair can be clearly identified above the doorway. This not only documents their original function, but also shows how the sculptures were integrated into the overall decorative concept of the room.
The models were exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1900. Their presentation is documented both in the Künstlerhaus register and in the exhibition catalog. Ludwig Hevesi also discussed Palais Dumba and its interior decoration in detail in 1899.
The pair is a particularly appealing example of the close relationship between architecture, painting, sculpture and decorative arts in the representative interiors of Vienna at the turn of the 20th century.
