Moritz Herrgesell attended Josef Hoffmann’s architecture class at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1901 to 1905. Hoffmann attested to his pupil’s “great talent and taste” and recommended him “as completely capable and skillful in all these tasks”. Moritz Herrgesell’s characteristic style can already be seen in his earlier designs from 1903 onwards. Despite his distinctive formal language, the influence of Josef Hoffmann is clearly visible. Herrgesell
had the honor of being able to regularly take part in exhibitions and competitions as a pupil on the recommendation of his teacher, a special task that he mastered brilliantly. After completing his studies, he worked in his parents’ carpentry business and presented his designs with great success at national and international exhibitions and competitions. The armchairs shown here can be regarded as one of Moritz Herrgesell’s first absolutely independent works from his early creative period. This ensemble from the heyday of Viennese furniture art is a rare museum example from the circle of the most important artists of the time.
