Brass figurine Diana on horseback, Franz Hagenauer, Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien, 1930s, marked
Stylized depictions of animals and figures with equestrian themes were typical motifs of the Hagenauer Werkstatte in the 1930s. These were often cast in brass and always reduced to the essentials in typical Hagenauer style.
Our naked rider on her rising horse is reminiscent of Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting and the wilderness. As the ruler of the animals, she appears resolute and powerful. Emanating elegance and lightness, she rides in perfect harmony with her steed. Only the rear hooves of the animal are attached to the plinth. This gives the figure an almost floating appearance.
The underside of the plinth is marked with “HAGENAUER WIEN” and with “wHw” in the circle.
