For their winter exhibition in 1911, the Museum of Art and Industry commissioned several designs from Josef Hoffmann. Our vase’s reduced depiction of bellflowers with foliage, together with a strictly geometric pattern, precisely reflect his form language. The production of this piece was a technical challenge. The colorless glass body of the vase was first underglazed “Neurot”, then overlaid in dark brown. In many steps, the brown overlay was then etched with acid, a process in which it is particularly difficult to obtain straight lines and geometric patterns.
The color combination and the signature “Prof. Hoffmann” make our vase a very outstanding object of this creative period and an important contemporary testimony of the time before the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914.
