    Description

The Paris World Exhibition in 1900 was a great success for the company Johann Loetz Witwe. Thanks to the outstanding achievement of the designer Franz Hofstötter, they were awarded the coveted Grand Prix at this exhibition. One of the main reasons for that were the complex decorative variations, the “World Exhibition Decors”. They are among the most desired vases today.

Franz Hofstötter, who was also a painter and sculptor, adorned this glass object with a strongly abstracted landscape. The dark base of the object could symbolically embody earth. Meanwhile the stripes above, which appear bluish due to the iridescence, could represent air. Further up, the decoration gradually turns orange and could symbolize the sun or fire. The latter would in this case actually be present in the form of a candle flame. In this design, Hofstätter subtly unites the primal elements used in the process of creating the art glass.

This piece was commissioned to the Johann Loetz Witwe glassworks by E.Bakalowits Söhne.
