Coffee service for 12 people, Otto Prutscher, Ernst Wahliss Wien, ca. 1910, signed
signed underneath with “Entw. Prof. Otto Prutscher” and marked with the company stamp (crown) Bib.: Claas Duit (ed.), Otto Prutscher 1880-1949 Architekt und Designer zwischen Tradition und Moderne, Birkhäuser Basel, 2020, p.228
Otto Prutscher’s high artistic standards for his own designs are representatively shown in this coffee service. The perfectly preserved service, consisting of twelve cups, a large pot and a small milk jug, is a prime example of the wealth of ideas of the architect and designer with regard to the conception of the decoration, the form and the color scheme.
His artistic vision – the emphasis of the form with the help of the decoration – goes hand in hand with a successful play of vertical and horizontal stripes in combination with naturalistic ornaments. The “Calais” shape, which was already particularly popular in the old Viennese porcelain manufactory, experienced a renaissance thanks to Prutscher’s aesthetic design in radiant gold. The apparent quality of this rare service is evident not only in Otto Prutscher’s signature, but also in that of the renowned porcelain manufacturer Ernst Wahliss. In addition, the coffee service was presented at the Stockholm Art and Fashion Exhibition in 1916.
