Centerpiece, designed by Josef Hoffmann, executed by Wiener Werkstätte, silver polished, moonstone with cabochon-cut, 1905
This centerpiece impressively demonstrates the use of architectural elements in the design of decorative art objects. Josef Hoffmann knew how to apply his architectural background to utilitarian objects unlike any other designer of the early 20th century. The set moonstone cabochons, along with the decorative ornaments of the silver bowl lend a wonderful elegance and rigor to its rough basic form.
It is fascinating that 20 years later, such ornaments are found again in the Art Deco movement, testifying to Hoffmann’s visionary mastery and making him undoubtedly one of the most important designers of Viennese Modernism.
This table centerpiece from 1904 was executed only twice by the Wiener Werkstätte and is an extremely rare and well-documented gem.
