Dancer with ribbon, attr. Franz Hagenauer, Werkstatte Hagenauer Wien, ca. 1930s, marked
Bib.: cf dancer illustrated in “Zettelkatalog der Werkstätte Hagenauer”, 1957, reprint Vienna 2011, No. 4500 marked “wHw” in the circle and “HAGENAUER WIEN”
Our nickel-plated brass figure was created by Werkstatte Hagenauer Wien and dates from the early 1930s. Indeed, from the 1920s, the two Hagenauer brothers started designing sculptures of women, which were no longer incorporated into utilitarian objects such as mirrors or candlesticks. Feminine depictions played an important role in their artistic careers from the outset. In their stylized formal language, they created an incredible variety of sculptures whose main motif was the female body.
This determined dancer radiates pure dynamism. The delicate female body, reduced to the essentials in typical Hagenauer fashion, is elegantly surrounded by a flowing ribbon. This sculpture captures the precise moment when the gymnast is already standing still, but her ribbon is still tracing the movement in the air. The talent of the Hagenauer brothers is made tangible here by their ability to transform a snapshot into a metal artwork.
