Candlestick with fable creature, Karl Hagenauer, Werkstätte Hagenauer Wiena, ca 1930, brass, marked
As the pupil of Josef Hoffmann and a freelance worker for the Wiener Werkstatte, Karl Hagenauer was one of the leading designers of the Viennese Design. Until the end of the 1920s, Josef Hoffmann tasked the talented Karl Hagenauer to createdesigns for the Wiener Werkstatte. However, fromaround 1930, his whole attention was drawn to the Werkstatte Hagenauer.
This design clearly shows the beginning of the rejection of the Wiener Jugendstil and the slowtendency towards the beginning of the Viennese Design. The reduced style combined with the refined lines that define the shape of the candlestick make this object really stand out as a beautiful early example of the typical Hagenauer style.
