Our elegant vase by Hans Bolek with the striking decor “Opal with Black” belongs to the group of glasses which Loetz designed after the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914.
Bolek plays with contrasts: the lower part is decorated with an ornament of heart leaf tendrils while the upper part only features plain lines. Another contrast is also created between the rough, opal white background texture and the smooth black decor. This decoration was etched out with hydrofluoric acid in several elaborate operations and testifies to the high level of craftsmanship of the Bohemian glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe.
