Candlestick from the “Fates-series”, Amphora-Werke Riessner Stellmacher & Kessel Turn-Teplitz, ca. 1902, ivory porcelain, marked
The candlestick exemplifies the unique features of ivory porcelain from the house of Amphora. Its delicate yellow color amazingly accurately captures the natural hue of ivory. The veining as well as the matte surface of the ceramics and their filigree workmanship are also reminiscent of the precious tusk material.
With the theme of the Norns or goddesses of fate, Eduard Stellmacher takes us into a symbolistic microcosm. Only faintly emerging, three female figures on the shaft of the candelabrum embody the unfathomable fate. At the foot of the candle, two women dance around the fire, caught up in a ghostly dance. Moths are magically drawn to the light, the place of final, inescapable destiny, and wonderfully filigree poppies suggest transience and oblivion.
Sculpturally so finely designed that one would think the candlestick was carved out of ivory, this is a true gem of symbolist Art Nouveau.
